Things are grim in Syria but the fighting between the mainly Arab rebels and the Kurds is, to my mind, perhaps the grimmest news of all. This isn’t a full-fledged ethnic conflict yet but it could soon develop into one. On this picture, taken a week ago, a Kurdish sniper of the YPG militia aims his rifle at a rebel position outside the northeastern Syrian town of Ras el Ayn.
